The Ministry operates four seasonal/ice roads including the Cumberland House Road (53 km), the Riverhurst Road (2 km), the Wollaston Lake Road (46 km) and the Athabasca Road (358 km).

  1. Safety Rules for Participant
  • Be familiar with the safety rules as safety is the number one priority.
  • Litter Pickers should be at least 12 years old and appropriate adult supervision must be provided.
  • Adult supervisors shall have a whistle or other warning device to alert pickers if there is a danger.
  • The youngest participants should work furthest from the road surface.
  • Children between 8 and 12 years of age may be permitted to pick litter on roadways with traffic volumes less than 1500 vehicles per day where supervision of these children provides for one adult aged 19 or older for every 3 children under the age of 12.
  • Participant aged 12-17 years must have adequate supervision by one or more adults 19 years of age or older.
  • Wear the Ministry supplied safety vest.
  • Heavy work gloves are recommended.
  • Sturdy shoes or boots should be worn.
  • Light coloured clothing that covers arms and legs should be worn.
  • Do not wear clothing or apparatus such as an iPod or Walkman, that might impair your vision or hearing.
  • Do not wear clothing that might distract the motorist.
  • No participant shall possess or be impaired by any drug, including alcohol.
  • Pick up litter only during daylight hours, work shall cease ½ hour prior to sunset.
  • Discontinue work during inclement weather.
  • Ensure that approved warning signs are installed and that no other signs, posters or displays are present to distract motorists.
    Work one side of the highway at a time facing oncoming traffic. Only cross the highway when safe to do so.
  • Do not touch, disturb or pick up any hazardous objects such as:
    • Discarded needles or syringes
    • Chemical, herbicide, or other hazardous product containers
    • Animal carcasses
  • Note the location of any hazardous items so that the Saskatchewan Highway crews can locate and remove the item.
  • Do not remove tires or tire debris. Note the location so that the Saskatchewan Highway and Infrastructure crews can locate and remove the tire debris for proper disposal.
  • Do not pick up litter in underpasses, bridges, or overpasses.
  • Stay off the highway surface.
  • Watch footing around culverts, washouts and other obstacles in the ditch.
  • If mowing, haying, or other highway maintenance or construction work is in progress, cease litter picking.
  • Do not attempt to squeeze trash bags to make room for more trash. Injuries from broken or jagged objects can result from this practice.
  • Do not engage in horseplay
  • Pets belonging to program participants are not allowed in the work area.
  • Participants are not to direct, stop, or interfere with traffic.

2.   Safety Rules for Shuttle Vehicles

  • All shuttle drivers must obey the rules of the road. Drive defensively and in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Use a minimum number of shuttle vehicles.
  • Never drive against the flow of traffic.
  • Only backup when it is safe to do so. Four-way flashers should be used when backing up.
  • Turn on four-way flashers when slowing down and stopping to pick up or drop off participants.
  • Whenever possible, pull right off of the highway when stopping to pick up or drop off participants by using approaches and side roads. Never block a travel lane. Never stop by a guardrail or a bridge.
  • Park all vehicles clear of the highway.
  • Park vehicles on same side of highway as the volunteers.
  • Never park a vehicle over the brow of a hill or on a curve in the highway.
  • Only approach a shuttle vehicle after it has come to a complete stop.
  • Do not try to get in or out of the shuttle vehicle until after it has come to a complete stop and the shuttle driver tells you it is okay to enter or exit the vehicle.
  • Always get in and out of the shuttle vehicle on the passenger side, furthest away from the travel lanes.
  • Do not carry more people than the vehicle is designed for.
  • Do not ride in the back of pick-ups or on the tailgate or on the outside of any vehicle.
